In this paper we address the problem of estimating and analyzing the motion in image sequences showing uid phenomenon. Due to the great deal of spatial and temporal distortions that luminance patterns exhibit in images of uid, standard techniques from Computer Vision, originally designed for quasi-rigid motions with stable salient features, are not well adapted in this context. In that prospect, we investigate a dedicated energy-based motion estimator. The considered functional includes an original data model relying on the continuity equation of uid mechanics. This new data model, which is speciically designed to be embedded in a multiresolution framework, is associated to an original div-curl type regularization. The optimization of the global energy function is solved within an eecient multigrid scheme. The performances of the resulting uid ow estimator are demonstrated both on synthetic and real (meteorological) image sequences.

Multiphase flow and tromp curve simulation of dense medium cyclones using Computational Fluid Dynamics

Dense Medium Cyclone is a high capacity device that is widely used in coal preparation. It is simple in design but the swirling turbulent flow, the presence of medium and coal with different density and size fraction and the presence of the air-core make the flow pattern in DMCs complex. In this article the flow pattern simulation of DMC is performed with computational fluid dynamics and Fluent...

9th International Symposium on Flow Visualisation, 2000 Adaptation of Standard Optic Flow Methods to Fluid Motion

In this paper, we address the problem of fluid motion estimation in image sequences. For such motions, standard dense motion estimation methods, based on intensity conservation and spatial coherence of motion field, are not suitable. This is due to the highly deformable nature of fluid medium. For all applications where fluid motions are to be recovered from images, it is then important to have...

Variational Dense Motion Estimation Using the Helmholtz Decomposition

We present a novel variational approach to dense motion estimation of highly non-rigid structures in image sequences. Our representation of the motion vector field is based on the extended Helmholtz Decomposition into its principal constituents: The laminar flow and two potential functions related to the solenoidal and irrotational flow, respectively. The potential functions, which are of prima...

Dense Motion Estimation from Eye-safe Aerosol Lidar Data

Results of the application of optical flow methods to eyesafe aerosol lidar images leading to dense velocity field estimations are presented. A fluid motion dedicated formulation is employed, taking into account the deforming shapes and changing brightness of flow visualization. The optical flow technique has the advantage of providing a vector at every pixel in the image, hence enabling access...
